MACKENNA HANSON IS AN ARTIST, WRITER, AND EDUCATOR WORKING IN MINNESOTA.
MacKenna Hanson is a Midwest and Southeast-based artist, educator, and writer. Born in 2003 in Jacksonville, Florida, she's lived in Georgia, North Carolina, and Stockholm, Sweden. Hanson uses her art to explore and critique of identity, taste, power, and culture. She's a triplet sister, a pop culture enthusiast, and an enjoyer of fun.
A Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hanson was assigned to SAIC's 2023 Dean's List for Outstanding Sophomores and was admitted into the School's 2024-2025 Advanced Painting Program.
Hanson has won two Honorable Mentions from the Scholastic Art Awards and an Honorable Mention from the United States Congressional Art Competition. She also received sizable merit scholarships from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Maine College of Art, Cornish College of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was granted entry into SAIC's Art Bash of 2022 and had two of her works exhibited in the LeRoy Neiman Center.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I make paintings and drawings using oil paint, gouache, and ink, and other media. My substrates are varied—they range from found cardboard to illustration board to hand-stretched canvas. The medium comes after the idea.
My work is my mind turned inside out. It is a deeply intimate portrayal of what I am feeling, what I am paying attention to, and how I am thinking about it. It is a distillation of how I observe the world and how my mind processes what I observe. Most essentially, I make art because I have to and it satisfies me. Through my practice I consider power, hierarchy, truth, and beauty. All my art is born from noticing, and asking why I noticed it. I believe in the power of seeing, and my art encourages others to see as well. There is nothing more important than asking questions. |
